The quick answer
Type what is my IP into Google and a number appears. That is your public IP address. Your operator lent it to your connection, and every website you open can see it. It tells the site which operator you use and roughly where you are. It does not tell anyone your name or your phone number.
If you only want to show my IP for a support call, that number is all you need. If you want to know what it reveals, read on.
What a website can read from my IP
- Your operator: Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL or a local broadband company.
- A city, which in India is often wrong. More on that below.
- Whether you are on mobile data, home broadband or an office line.
- Whether it is IPv4 or IPv6. Jio gives most phones an IPv6 address, so a search for what is my IP address IPv4 may show nothing on a Jio SIM.
- Nothing personal. Your Aadhaar, your name and your address are not inside an IP address.
Who can link the address to you
Only your operator. It knows which SIM or which broadband account had which address at which moment, and it gives that information to the authorities when the law requires it. A website cannot do this, however alarming its banner looks. Pages that shout your IP back at you in red are selling something.
Good to remember
- ✓Restarting mobile data often gives you a new address. That is normal.
- ✓What is my IP public address and the address in your Wi-Fi settings are different things. The second one is private and stays inside your home.
- ✓Logging in to an account identifies you far better than an IP address does.
- ✓If you want to know my IP address details before a support call, a lookup page is enough. No app is needed.
- ✓Akimbo keeps no record of the address you connect from.

Questions
Things people ask the bot
What is my IP used for?
Websites need it to send pages back to you. They also use it to guess your country and your language.
Can anyone find my home from my IP?
No. It shows your operator and a rough area, and often the wrong city.
Why is my IP a long string with letters and colons?
That is IPv6. Jio and some other operators use it by default. It works in the same way.
Why did a website block me for no reason?
On mobile data you share an address with other users. Turn mobile data off and on to get a new one.
Does a VPN change my IP?
Yes. Sites see the VPN server's address and country in place of yours.
Is it legal to hide my IP in India?
Yes. Using a VPN is legal in India.
Still unsure?
