The short answer
Proton VPN is usable from India, including its free plan. On the company's plans page, checked on 2026-10-18, the free plan has no data limit, allows one connection at a time and offers servers in ten countries chosen from a list that includes Singapore, Japan and the USA. The free plan does not let you pick the country yourself. That suits browsing and a quick check on public Wi-Fi, and it is a tight fit for a household.
Servers and Indian addresses
In 2022 Proton announced that it would take its physical servers out of India because of the CERT-In rules on five years of customer records. It said it would keep Indian addresses available through servers that sit in Singapore. Press coverage at the time described it that way. In practice a site that checks your location may still treat you as somewhere other than India, so a banking or UPI app can behave oddly while the tunnel is on. Turn it off for those apps.
Android, PC and the extension
- Android: install the Proton VPN app from the Play Store, or from the company's own website if it is not listed for you. You sign in with a Proton account.
- Windows: download the app from protonvpn.com only. Search results often rank copies above the official page.
- Browser extension: it covers the browser and nothing else on the computer.
- Premium and mod APKs: files promising the paid tier for nothing are not from Proton. They are unsafe to install.
- CapCut and similar apps: a one-device free plan means you cannot keep the PC and the phone connected at once.
Where the key from our bot differs
With Akimbo there is no account to open. You message our Telegram bot, it sends back a VLESS key, and any free client app will take that key. One key runs on five devices, so a phone and a laptop stay connected together, and you choose among six countries. We do not offer a permanent free plan: you get ten free days of the full service, then the key stops unless you pay by UPI or crypto. Proton's free plan is a good fit if you want a long-term free tier on a single device and are happy to have the country picked for you. The key suits you if you want several devices or want to choose the country.
A fair way to choose
We sell a competing product, so treat our view as one input and check the plans page yourself. Compare the number of devices, whether you can choose the country, whether an account is needed, and how each behaves on your network in the evening. This page was prepared by Akimbo with AI assistance, using the sources listed below and our own service settings. It is not a test of Proton.

Privacy
We do not know who you are, and we like it that way
There is no account here, so there is nothing to attach a log to. You never give us an email, a phone number or a name. Our servers sit outside India, which keeps us outside the CERT-In retention rules, and we say so plainly instead of pretending to be beyond every law.
- Our promise
- No sign-up, no email, no phone number
- No browsing history, no connection logs
- Servers outside India and its retention rules
- UPI or crypto, no card details stored
- Nothing renews and nothing is charged quietly
Questions
Things people ask the bot
Is Proton VPN free in India?
It has a free plan, with one connection at a time and no data limit as of 2026-10-18. Check the plans page for the current terms.
Can I choose a country on the free plan?
The plans page lists servers in ten countries, picked for you. Choosing a specific one is for paid plans.
Does Proton VPN work for CapCut?
We have not tested it with CapCut, so we cannot say. A free plan on one device also stops you using phone and PC together.
Is there a safe Proton VPN APK?
Use the company's own download or the Play Store. Files from mirrors that promise premium for free are not safe.
Do I need an account for the Akimbo key?
No. You need Telegram. The bot sends the key and a QR code, with no email or password.
Is the Proton browser extension enough?
Only for browser traffic. The rest of the device stays on your normal connection.
Still unsure?
Support and your key live in the same Telegram bot. The setup page shows which app to install.
